What is nail technician insurance?

Nail technician insurance protects you against the specific risks of providing nail treatments. The core covers are public liability, treatment risk (claims from treatments going wrong), and products liability (claims from products you use or sell). If a client develops an infection, has an allergic reaction to gel polish, or suffers damage to natural nails, these are treatment risk claims that standard public liability will not cover.

The NHBF recommends all nail technicians carry public liability and treatment risk as a minimum. If you employ anyone, employers liability is a legal requirement.

Salon Gold is the market leader for nail technician insurance. Their policy includes public liability, treatment risk, products liability, and financial loss cover as standard. Separate packages are available for salon-based, mobile, and freelance nail technicians, each designed around how you actually work.

With 35+ years in hair and beauty insurance, their policy wording is specific to beauty professionals. They also offer a community platform and industry Hub with guides for nail technicians. The main downside is being a single provider rather than a comparison broker.

Strengths
  • Widest treatment cover in the market
  • 35+ years beauty specialist
  • Packages for salon, mobile, freelance
  • Student and teacher cover available
  • Instant online documents
Weaknesses
  • Single provider, no comparison
  • Slightly more expensive than budget options
  • Phone support not 24/7

PL cover£2m - 5m
Treatment risk?Included

Protectivity offers the cheapest nail tech insurance we found at 3.44 pounds per month. Treatment risk is included, covering standard nail treatments plus makeup if qualified. Accidental damage to clients' property is covered as standard, essential for mobile work.

Equipment cover is available as an add-on. Best for sole traders and freelancers; larger salons with employees should look at Salon Gold or Everywhen. For a solo mobile nail tech wanting affordable cover, Protectivity is the best value option.

Strengths
  • Cheapest at 3.44 pounds per month
  • Treatment risk included
  • Accidental property damage covered
  • Designed for mobile and freelance
  • Equipment cover available
Weaknesses
  • Less suited to salon premises
  • Fewer optional extras
  • Limited employer options

Treatment risk?Via insurer

Simply Business compares quotes from multiple insurers in one form. For nail technicians, you can include public liability, treatment risk, stock, tools, and employers liability. Prices start from around 5 pounds per month with a 7-minute quote process.

Treatment risk availability depends on which panel insurer you are matched with. For standard nail services, this works well. For advanced or niche treatments, verify the policy wording covers your specific services before buying.

Strengths
  • Compare multiple insurers
  • Competitive from 5 pounds per month
  • Quick 7-minute quote
  • Flexible add-on covers
  • UK claims team
Weaknesses
  • Treatment risk varies by panel insurer
  • Not a beauty specialist
  • Advanced treatments may not be covered

From~£3.30/mo
PL cover£1m - 5m
Treatment risk?Included

Professional Beauty Direct specialises in beauty insurance with policies from 39.50 pounds per year. Treatment risk and products liability are included. Their standout feature is a teacher training extension covering you as tutor and up to 15 students, ideal if you run nail courses.

A smaller, less well-known provider with limited independent reviews. If you teach or want the cheapest specialist cover, they are worth a look. For everything else, Salon Gold offers more comprehensive packages.

Strengths
  • Very affordable from 39.50 pounds per year
  • Teacher training extension available
  • Treatment risk included
  • Designed for beauty professionals
  • Quick online quote
Weaknesses
  • Smaller provider
  • Limited independent reviews
  • Claims process less documented

PL cover£1m - 5m
Treatment risk?Included

Salon Saver is part of the same group as Salon Gold (Barkdene Limited) but positioned as the budget option. Nail tech insurance includes public liability, treatment risk, products liability, and financial loss cover. Personal accident and employers liability are available as extras.

Their approach is stripping out covers you do not need. If you want essential cover without paying for extras, Salon Saver delivers. The downside is that adding extras can close the price gap with Salon Gold's more comprehensive package.

Strengths
  • Part of established Barkdene group
  • Treatment risk included
  • Affordable essential-only pricing
  • Financial loss cover included
  • Personal accident available
Weaknesses
  • Fewer standard covers than Salon Gold
  • Adding extras closes price gap
  • Less comprehensive for premises

What to look for

Treatment cover for your services. Check your policy covers gel nails, acrylics, BIAB, nail art, and any add-on services like waxing or lash extensions. Some policies exclude certain treatments.

Mobile suitability. If you are not salon-based, ensure your policy covers work in clients' homes, rented chairs, and events. Accidental damage to clients' property should be included.

Equipment cover. UV/LED lamps, e-files, and stock represent real investment. Check limits and whether it is included or an add-on.

Student cover. If you teach nail courses, look for a teacher training extension. Salon Gold and Professional Beauty Direct both offer this.

Common questions

Do I need insurance as a nail technician?
Public liability is not legally required but most salons and chair rental agreements require proof of insurance. Treatment risk cover is strongly recommended. If you employ anyone, employers liability is a legal requirement.
What does treatment risk cover?
It protects you if a nail treatment causes injury or illness: allergic reactions, infections, damage to natural nails, and burns from UV or LED lamps. Standard public liability does not cover these.
How much does nail tech insurance cost?
Between 3 and 15 pounds per month for a sole trader. The cheapest we found starts from 3.30 pounds per month with Professional Beauty Direct.
Am I covered working in clients homes?
Only if your policy covers mobile work. Protectivity, Salon Gold, and Professional Beauty Direct all offer mobile nail technician policies including accidental damage to clients property.
